FAA Patch

Understanding Air Traffic Control at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh
The following routes have been developed for AirVenture to enable pilots to more easily navigate from Fisk to their assigned landing runway. The current active arrival runway(s) will be included on the AirVenture arrival ATIS on frequency 118.75 and via telephone at 866-493-5553. VFR ARRIVAL RUNWAY PATHS - RUNWAY 18L or 18R (via railroad tracks)

RUNWAY 18L/R (LEFT/RIGHT) VIA RAILROAD TRACKS (NORTHEAST)

  • Depart Fisk following the railroad tracks northeast

  • Enter the RIGHT BASE for RUNWAY/s 18 L/R inside the gravel pit located approximately ½ mile northwest of the Wittman Regional Airport

  • The Control Tower will assign either Runway 18Lor R.

  • Be prepared to change runways (Left vs Right) with little notice!

  • Maintain 1,800' msl until established on Right Base, THEN

  • DO NOT DESCEND BELOW 1,500' msl south of Runway 27 on Final to Runway/s 18L/R! THERE WILL BE AIRCRAFT DEPARTING AND ARRIVING RUNWAY 27 BELOW YOU!

  • This altitude restriction is necessary to protect aircraft departing, arriving (as well as for go-arounds) Runway 27!

  • The controller may instruct you to "land on the "Blue Dot", the "Pink Dot ", "land long" or "land abeam the control tower" .

  • The Blue Dot is located just south of the relocated threshold of Runway 18R, just abeam of the control tower. Remaining runway length from this point is 6,350'.

  • The Pink Dot is further down the runway, just north of Taxiway P3. Remaining runway length from the Pink Dot is 4750'.

larger view

  • If you're instructed to land on Runway 18L - note this temporary runway is 6,300' ft long but only 50' wide. (It is normally a taxiway during non-AirVenture times.)

  • You may also see "Yellow" and "Purple" Dots on the departure end of Runway 18R. These are NOT to be used for Runway 18R arrivals.

CHANGE OF PLANS

Be prepared! The control instructions may change from what you were initially told. For instance you may have been too instructed to "land on the Blue Dot". This would have been issued if there was another aircraft ahead of you landing at the Pink Dot, however by the time you reach the runway…

The other aircraft has exited the runway, therefore the controller may now instruct you to "land on the Pink Dot" which will allow for another aircraft to land behind you (on the Blue Dot) and still provide for allowable runway separation.

These last minute adjustments may occur no matter what runway you land on. The only difference will be the description of the touchdown point (the "blue dot" or the "pink dot")

Stay alert for traffic ahead of you on final and also for any potential traffic that may be sequenced from the left (or base) near the gravel pit.

If a "Go-Around" is needed, NOTIFY ATC immediately for resequencing instructions!

EXITING RUNWAYS

See the "Exiting Runways" section for details on what is to be expected of you once you have landed.

VFR ARRIVAL RUNWAY PATHS - RUNWAY 18R only (via East-West Road - Fisk Avenue)

larger view

RUNWAY 18R (RIGHT) VIA FISK AVENUE

  • Depart Fisk following Fisk Avenue (due east).

  • This will be your "Left Crosswind" to Runway 18R.

  • You may notice a tall microwave tower to the east/southeast of Fisk. The road you are to follow is ½ mile north of that tower. Keep the tower off the right wing.

larger view

Beyond the microwave tower, while still following Fisk Avenue, you will see a busy interchange. Aim for that interchange.

You will be entering on a left crosswind leg for Runway 18R.

  • Maintain 1,800' msl until established on Left Downwind Runway 18 Right as there will be VFR aircraft departing Runways 18 Left & Right below you climbing to 1,300' msl.

  • Be Alert! There may be "Ultralight" aircraft operating in the "Ultralight" pattern located at the southwest corner of the airport (at or below 1,100' msl)!

  • Be Alert! There may be IFR aircraft departing Runways 18 Left and Right climbing through 1,800' msl!

larger animated view

  • Enter Left Downwind Runway 18 Right over the 1st north/south road east of the airport and inside the Lake Winnebago shoreline.

  • Follow County Road "I" (Oregon Street) to the north. Prepare for landing on Runway 18R.

larger view

  • Begin your descent as you enter Left Downwind!

  • VERY IMPORTANT! Take both the wind and your airspeed into consideration and Begin your "Left Base" (turn) so as to be established on left base abeam the control tower or "Blue Dot".

larger view

  • DO NOT continue north on downwind past the approach end of Runway 31!

  • IF YOU CANNOT TURN BASE ABEAM THE CONTROL TOWER (or blue dot), watch for traffic and make a right turn to the southeast for resequencing!

  • During AirVenture, Runway 18R has a relocated threshold located well beyond the painted number 18 and is identified with Runway End Identification Lights (REILS) and white markings. Make sure that you land south of this relocated threshold.

  • A temporary VASI will be in place for arrivals to Runway 18R and will be located abeam the temporary relocated threshold for Runway 18R.

  • The Runway 18R "Threshold" is temporarily relocated south during AirVenture to allow aircraft to cross the approach end of Runway 18R while allowing for aircraft to arrive without disruption.

larger view

  • Note the Blue Dot, which is located just south of the relocated threshold. Remaining runway length is 6350' from this point. There is also a Pink Dot, which is south of the Blue Dot with 4750' of runway length remaining.

  • Unless instructed otherwise by ATC, plan to touch down on the Pink Dot!

  • Pilots should use extra caution to maintain a safe airspeed and avoid low turns on landing approach.

  • Be Alert! You may also see "Yellow" and "Purple" Dots on the departure end of Runway 18R. These are NOT to be used for Runway 18R arrivals.
